What Is an Addiction?

Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, drugs) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, shopping, pornography) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health. The use/act becomes a way to avoid pain and difficult feelings. Addicts may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.

What Is an Eating Disorder?

Eating disorders describe illnesses that are characterized by irregular eating habits and severe distress or concern about body weight or shape. Eating disturbances may include inadequate or excessive food intake, which can ultimately damage an individual’s health.
